Thanks, Stacy. That's another side to buying used (so many thrift stores are operated by non-profits serving under-served populations) that I did not even discuss here. Thanks for the reminder!

Thoughtful post! Thank you for mentioning Union Gospel Mission's thrift store. I'm a staff person at the Mission, and the revenue from the store helps people in our addiction recovery program, so Doug did well not only in his purchase, but where the money goes from the purchase. God Bless.

John,

I really enjoyed your series on gift-buying! Thanks for allowing us to see your personal navigation of the call to live justly in the midst of this season of gift-giving. And I totally want one of those onesies for my baby :)

Erika, We share an anniversary of sorts and a precious something old. Today is my 22nd year of marriage to my sweetheart. As a young single mother marrying a Bible college student, there was no money for a dress. I prayed and found one wadded up in a ball at a yard sale for $20. It was the most gorgeous Victorian lace from who knows when. My mother, the seamstress, washed and repaired it. When she did so again after the wedding, the fabric actually began to disintigrate, it was so old.

A lovely answer to prayer, for what bride doesn't want beauty on her special day!

Happy anniversary and Merry Christmas!

"only buy secondhand for a year" ... great idea.

Kirsten once found a twenty dollar bill in a coat pocket that she bought at a thrift store. She made money on that trip.

Wonderful insight, sister...as usual.

My wife is a missionary in Coatesville, and they have a thrift store. She finds amazing buys all of the time, stuff that we could never afford to buy new.

Of course, as you so aptly point out, buying gifts for others seems to be different. I think it's our pride that prohibits us from making that practical and responsible choice.

Thanks Erika, I appreciate your thoughts. This Christmas has been a journey into some of the injustice of all the "retail" gift giving, so your post rings true for me. I like the simplicity of the thrift store and am encouraged by your thoughts. Dustin put it quite well in his comment as well.

Excellent thoughts! Our consumer mentality not only dominates our purchasing habits, but it steers our ecclesiastical decisions as well.

In my estimation, one of the biggest threats to the stability of the true and subversive body of Christ is consumerism and greed.
