Se habla espanol

Lately I have been working harder at teaching our kids Spanish. Doug is of the mind that I should talk with them only in Spanish at home, and while that sounds great in theory, he will be quick to tell you that it has not really happened. Mercy and Aaron both know a good number of words, however, and we have started checking out a lot more books from the library that are in Spanish which helps immensely. Mercy also knows when to say “hi” and when to say “hola” when we are out walking which I personally find to be really cool. And just today I was driving home from the store and Mercy went into total Spanish teacher mode in the back seat with Aaron: “Aaron, say nariz.” “Nariz.” “Aaron, say boca.” “Boca.” So, as much as I have failed to really immerse them in the language, they are learning.

We have been suffering from a stomach bug right now that seems to have hit the kids the worst, and both of them have vomited and experienced diarrhea this past week. The morning after Mercy had her middle-of-the-night run to the toilet, she was sitting at the breakfast table with Aaron and I brought up what had happened the night before. Mercy turned to Aaron and said: “Aaron, last night I had diarrhea.” She paused and looked intently at him and explained: “Diarrhea is Spanish for poop.”

I almost fell out of my chair, I was laughing so hard! She was so earnest! Doug kept his composure, though his back was turned. I just laughed and laughed…

  2. Hysterical! Since we live in Paris (I work with Child Evangelism Fellowship), I can only imagine the hilarity of a bi-lingual home once we have kids. Thanks for sharing!
