When James was small, he went to bed with a small flashlight that he could turn on to illuminate any "monster" shapes lurking. My littlest one is convinced there are spiders in his room, so we're careful to clean them with "special" spray. Having tried everything else, this seems to work better than trying to reason with him that there are no spiders in his room. You know, they make special “monster spray” for that.
